Agents Remember: How the Power Law Freezes Again
Agents add a new kind of memory. If they remember brand, money and early arrival, the power law freezes again, faster than before. If they remember contribution, memory becomes the reset nature always had.
In We Inherited Nature's Power Law, Then Broke It, I argued that hierarchy in nature breathes because nature forgets, and that human systems froze it because institutions remember: inheritance, credentials, networks, the rich getting richer because the record says they were rich before.
AI promised a reset. The open web had promised one too: anyone could publish, and the field would be level. It was, for a while. Then a few sites took most of the traffic. The machine that ranked pages learned to prefer the pages it had preferred before.
Agents add a new kind of memory. An agent that booked the same café three times stops searching. An agent that trusted one creator keeps recommending her. Multiply that by a billion personal agents and you have a memory with a power law built in: whoever gets into it early is hard to remove.
I do not think this is the whole story. A language model reads more than a ranking algorithm ever did. It can tell care from fake reviews, the way new lenders read how a person actually spends instead of trusting an old credit score. And the companies that own the agents compete for the user's trust: an agent that is caught being biased gets switched off. Search advertising was owned by two companies, and a small business could still play with five hundred rupees, because the platform needed it to.
So the question is not whether agents will remember. They will. It is what they remember. If they remember brand, money and early arrival, the power law freezes again, faster than before. If they remember contribution (what a person or a business actually did for the people who used it), then memory becomes the reset nature always had: advantage that has to be renewed by doing, not inherited by having been there first.
That is a design choice, and children are part of it. A child who grows up making things that others use builds a record an agent can read. A child who grows up only consuming leaves none.
