The Compression Manifesto
Groups survive. Individuals die. For 70,000 years, cooperation ran on compression — and humans kept exercising the one thing that could not be compressed. AI is the first compression that touches it.
Groups survive. Individuals die.
This has been true for 70,000 years. A lone human is weak. Slow. Clawless. Poor night vision, years of helpless childhood. The world is teeth, scarcity, disease, cold, heat, and other species who want what we want.
Cooperation is not strategy. It is the minimum requirement to exist. But cooperation without efficiency is chaos — ten together without coordination is ten individuals failing in proximity. So efficiency became the invisible hand shaping every structure, every tool, every invention humanity ever made.
To cooperate at scale, we needed to compress.
The compression stack
- Language — compressed coordination. Before: gesture, grunt, hope. After: "You left, I right, we trap." Tribes of 150 could act as one.
- Writing — compressed memory. Debts, laws, stories persisting beyond any single mind. Cities rose.
- Number — compressed comparison. Money made value legible. Trade could scale. Economies emerged.
- Machine — compressed labour. Steam replaced muscle. Factories fed millions.
- Computer — compressed calculation. Processing beyond human speed. Information economies emerged.
- Network — compressed distance. Coordination at light speed. Billions connected.
Each layer enabled cooperation at larger scale. Each layer caused atrophy in some human capability. Oral memory faded when writing arrived. Mental arithmetic faded when calculators arrived. Wayfinding faded when GPS arrived.
This was acceptable — because throughout all of it, humans kept exercising what could not be compressed:
- The generation of alternatives when the path was unclear.
- The updating of belief when reality contradicted expectation.
- The recognition of pattern across contexts that looked nothing alike.
- The tracing of consequence before action was taken.
These capacities created every layer of the stack. They directed every tool, caught every failure, corrected every course.
Compression handled efficiency. Humans handled adaptation. This division built everything.
The pattern is breaking
AI is the latest compression — the most powerful yet. Cognition itself: summarised, analysed, generated, retrieved, processed at scales no human can touch. Extraordinary. And following the pattern, it should free humans to do more of what only humans can do.
Instead:
- AI generates alternatives. The first output is accepted.
- AI evaluates. Views are no longer formed.
- AI recognises patterns. Internal libraries stop being built.
- AI traces consequence. Simulation stops.
The capabilities that created every tool are being outsourced to the latest tool. Compression always caused atrophy — that was fine when what atrophied was efficiency: memory, calculation, retrieval.
What is atrophying now is adaptation itself. These are not skills. They are the substrate. Every previous compression was built, directed, and corrected by humans exercising these capacities. Lose them and there is no one to build the next layer, no one to direct the current one, no one to notice when the tool is wrong.
Different in danger, not in kind
The division held through every transition — stone to bronze, muscle to steam, analog to digital. Tools handled what could be routinised; humans handled what could not.
AI is not different in kind. It is different in danger. Not because it is powerful — because for the first time, the thing being compressed is the thing that does the compressing.
The promise is real: cognitive capability democratised, problems solved at scales never possible. The promise has a requirement: humans who can direct it, verify it, catch its failures, build what comes next. Humans with adaptive capacity intact.
The split is already underway. Some exercise adaptation more, using AI for efficiency. Some exercise it less, outsourcing it to AI. Same tools, opposite trajectories. What atrophies does not announce itself — it fades quietly while the outputs stay polished, until the situation arises that requires what has faded. And it is not there.
What we hold
Compression is not the enemy. Compression built everything. The enemy is forgetting which side of the division we stand on.
Efficiency can be outsourced. Adaptation must be exercised.
The twentieth century asked: how do we make machines more capable? The twenty-first must ask: how do we keep humans capable enough to direct them?
